Bangladesh is moving forward with plans to develop its tourism industry through a comprehensive master plan aimed at unlocking the country’s tourism potential and attracting more domestic and international visitors.
The government is working on a long-term strategy to ensure the planned development of tourist destinations across the country, with a focus on improving infrastructure, strengthening visitor services and promoting sustainable tourism.
Around 1,498 potential tourist destinations have been identified nationwide as part of the initiative. The proposed plan is expected to provide a coordinated framework for developing these locations while preserving their natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The initiative also places importance on making tourist attractions more environmentally friendly and accessible. Community-based tourism is another key priority, with plans to involve local communities in managing destinations and creating economic opportunities for residents.
Improving tourist safety is also part of the government’s approach. Steps are being considered to strengthen the Tourist Police and enhance security arrangements at popular destinations.
In addition, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism is planning to work with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to promote cultural tourism. The proposed collaboration is expected to help showcase Bangladesh’s history, traditions, festivals and cultural heritage to a wider audience.
As part of its international promotion strategy, the government is also working to strengthen the Beautiful Bangladesh campaign and develop an official tourism website to present the country’s attractions to foreign visitors.
The long-awaited tourism master plan has faced delays over the years due to administrative complications, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent reviews. The government has now renewed efforts to finalise the strategy and move towards its implementation. JS Session+2
The broader ambition is to position tourism as an important contributor to Bangladesh’s economy, generate employment and encourage greater private-sector investment.
If implemented effectively, the master plan could open new opportunities for local businesses, tourism entrepreneurs and communities while helping Bangladesh establish itself as a more competitive destination in the international tourism market.
