Iran has laid out seven conditions that it wants fulfilled before beginning peace negotiations with the United States and reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security official, said Tehran had presented its demands to Washington in September. However, he did not disclose all the details. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously provided further information about the proposed conditions.
One of Iran’s key demands is the removal of US sanctions imposed on the country following the collapse of an Islamabad memorandum of understanding in July. Tehran is also calling for a reduction in the American military presence across the Middle East.
Another condition involves restoring oil export exemptions that were granted in June as part of the earlier understanding. Iran has also demanded the release of its frozen financial assets held in Qatar and other locations.
The future of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is another major issue. Tehran wants formal recognition of a new shipping route designated by Iran and Oman, while demanding that other routes through the strategic waterway be closed.
Iran is also insisting on an end to hostilities across all conflict zones, particularly an end to Israeli military attacks in Lebanon.
In addition to these demands, Rezaei had previously called for the removal of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports and an end to Washington’s alleged interference in Iran’s internal affairs.
He also accused the United States of interfering in Iran’s domestic matters through its cooperation with groups opposed to the Iranian revolution.
Tehran maintains that fulfilling these conditions would create the basis for restarting peace negotiations with Washington and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The demands come amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States, with the strategic waterway remaining a major concern for international shipping and global energy markets.
However, whether Washington will accept Tehran’s conditions remains uncertain.
