Garment Workers’ Protest Brings Traffic to a Standstill in Mirpur
Traffic movement came to a halt in parts of Dhaka’s Mirpur on Sunday morning as garment workers blocked major roads to press for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.
The workers staged demonstrations and blocked roads in the Mirpur 10 and Mirpur 12 areas, causing significant disruption to vehicle movement in the neighbourhood.
The protest is part of an ongoing movement, with garment workers continuing their demonstrations over the past several days to demand higher minimum wages.
Speaking about the situation, Sub-Inspector Hafizul Islam of Mirpur Police Station confirmed that workers had blocked the roads and were holding small processions.
He said additional police personnel had been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents, while senior police officials were also present at the scene.
No reports of violence or other unpleasant incidents had been received at the time of reporting, he added.
The road blockade has disrupted regular traffic movement in the affected areas, leaving commuters facing difficulties.
