MP Rumin Farhana Clashes With Police Officer, Says ‘You Were a Big Awami League Supporter

A heated exchange took place between Barrister Rumin Farhana, a member of parliament representing Brahmanbaria-2, and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station on Thursday night, October 22.

The confrontation occurred inside the OC’s office when Farhana visited the police station to raise concerns about security arrangements during her visit to a Durga Puja venue and allegations of irregularities and corruption involving the police officer.

During the meeting, a person accompanying the MP accused OC Manzur Kader Bhuiyan of accepting a bribe of Tk 30,000. The officer denied the allegation and claimed that the individual had been coached to make the accusation.

As the argument escalated, Farhana questioned the officer’s political background, telling him, “You were a big Awami League supporter.”

The OC subsequently alleged that the MP had arrived at the police station with hundreds of people, creating an unsettling situation. He also rejected the corruption allegations against him as baseless.

Farhana, however, maintained that numerous allegations of corruption and irregularities had been raised against the officer. She further accused him of behaving disrespectfully toward an elected member of parliament.

The incident has drawn attention to the growing dispute between the lawmaker and the local police administration. However, the bribery allegation and the competing claims about the confrontation have not been independently established.

Attempts to obtain a comment from the Brahmanbaria superintendent of police were unsuccessful, as he did not answer several phone calls.
