A businessman in Dumuria upazila of Khulna has been sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment for allegedly selling horse meat to customers as beef.
The sentence was handed down by a mobile court jointly operated by SRB-6 and the executive magistrate of Dumuria upazila following an operation in the Kanchanpur area on Saturday, October 24.
According to officials, the accused, identified as Anichur Rahman Palash, 40, was arrested during the drive after authorities found that he had allegedly misrepresented horse meat as beef for sale. He is the son of the late Lutfur Rahman, a local resident.
Additional Superintendent of Police Zayen Uddin Muhammad Ziyad, company commander of SRB-6’s Satkhira CPC-1, confirmed the incident.
He said the joint mobile court operation was conducted around noon on October 24 by members of SRB-6’s Satkhira CPC-1 and the executive magistrate of Dumuria upazila.
Following the arrest, Md. Sohel Rana, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate of Dumuria, sentenced Palash to three months of simple imprisonment under Section 16 of the Animal Welfare Act.
Lieutenant Colonel Nistar Ahmed, commander of SRB-6, said operations against dishonest businesses and individuals involved in unethical activities would continue.
Authorities said the drive was part of ongoing enforcement efforts against fraudulent commercial practices. Selling one type of meat under the false identity of another raises concerns about consumer deception and the integrity of food sales.
The incident has drawn attention to the importance of ensuring transparency in meat markets and protecting consumers from fraudulent practices.
