Youth Women’s League Leader Detained While Attempting to Enter India

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a leader of the Chapainawabganj district unit of the Jubo Mohila League while she was attempting to travel to India through the Sonamasjid immigration checkpoint in Shibganj.

The woman, identified as Sultana Begum, 35, was detained near the Sonamasjid zero point on Wednesday afternoon, October 21. She was subsequently handed over to police for further legal action.

According to BGB officials, Sultana identified herself during questioning as the treasurer of the Chapainawabganj district unit of the Jubo Mohila League, an organisation authorities describe as banned. She is reportedly the daughter of Julmot Ali and a resident of the Sheala Colony area in Chapainawabganj Sadar.

Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Al-Amin Apu, commander of BGB’s 59th Battalion, confirmed the detention. He said the operation was carried out based on intelligence information.

BGB officials also said preliminary information indicated that a sabotage case had been filed against her at Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station. The case was reportedly filed on September 22, 2024.

Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman confirmed that BGB had handed the woman over to police. He said legal proceedings were underway.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the outcome of the case or whether any additional charges will be brought against her.
