A tense situation reportedly unfolded along the Bangladesh–India border in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, after members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly crossed the international boundary and threw a sound grenade at local Bangladeshi workers. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) lodged a formal protest with the BSF over the incident.
According to Karimul Islam, assistant director of the Rangpur 61 BGB Battalion (Teesta-2), the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, October 24, near the Bamandol border area in Burimari Union. No casualties were reported, but the incident caused panic among residents.
According to BGB and local sources, several Bangladeshi workers were collecting stones and sand from the Saniazan River near sub-pillar No. 4 of main border pillar No. 837. A patrol team of 10–12 BSF personnel from the BSF Bari camp of India’s 98th Battalion allegedly crossed the zero line and entered approximately 150 yards into Bangladeshi territory.
The BSF personnel reportedly entered the river and attempted to assault the workers. After hearing their cries, around 15–20 local residents arrived with sticks to resist them, leading to a chase between the two sides.
As the situation escalated, the BSF personnel allegedly detonated a sound grenade before quickly retreating into Indian territory. BGB members from the Burimari company headquarters later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
Karimul Islam said the sound grenade was used to intimidate the workers. He added that the BGB had sent a formal protest note to the BSF.
However, during a brief flag meeting between BGB and BSF representatives on Saturday evening, the BSF reportedly denied crossing the border and throwing the sound grenade, according to the BGB.
