Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan has expressed hope that National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam will resign from his parliamentary seat within the next 24 hours following his remarks questioning the legitimacy of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
In a social media post late Saturday night, Khan questioned how Islam could serve as chief whip of the opposition in parliament while describing the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government as illegitimate.
Khan said Islam had compared Tarique Rahman’s government to that of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, claiming both were in power illegitimately.
He argued that Islam should have resigned from parliament before making such remarks about the prime minister’s legitimacy.
Khan further stated that if Islam did not resign after declaring the BNP government illegitimate, his position would lack a moral basis.
He expressed hope that Islam would step down within 24 hours to demonstrate his commitment to political ethics and then lead a strong street movement to prove the NCP’s popular support.
