Information Minister Says Awami League Must Apologize Before Returning to Politics
Bangladesh’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman Partho has said the Awami League must acknowledge the events of July 2024, apologize for its past actions and accept the legal process involving those responsible before seeking a return to politics.
Speaking about the party’s political future, Partho said the Awami League could not resume political activities while denying the events of July. He added that the extent to which the public would accept the party again would ultimately depend on the people’s decision and the course of events.
The minister said the Awami League had largely remained inactive politically since many of its leaders left the country around two and a half years ago, although a small number of people had occasionally taken part in rallies. He said the party would need to carefully reconsider its position if it hoped to return to the political arena.
Addressing the possibility of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina returning to Bangladesh, Partho said time would determine whether she would come back. In his view, the current political circumstances were not yet suitable for her return. He also said people had not forgotten the killings and acts of repression associated with the events of 2024.
Partho also criticized the Awami League’s statements about democracy. He argued that the party had weakened the country’s democratic system during its 17 years in power, while claiming that the current government had worked to restore democracy through elections.
Commenting on the atmosphere surrounding religious festivals, he said that despite previous concerns raised by the Awami League about celebrations under a BNP-led government, Durga Puja had been observed in a festive atmosphere across Bangladesh this year.
Local and regional leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) and its affiliated organizations were present during the minister’s remarks.
