New Hope for Ukraine Peace? Witkoff Brings Fresh Proposals to Putin

Putin Meets US Envoy in Fresh Push to End Ukraine War

Russian President Vladimir Putin met US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday as Washington stepped up efforts to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. Witkoff said he had brought new ideas for a possible peace agreement.

The meeting followed Witkoff’s discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Norway a day earlier. US officials described those talks as positive, raising hopes for renewed diplomatic efforts involving Moscow and Kyiv.

During the meeting at Konstantinovsky Palace, Witkoff presented proposals aimed at moving the peace process forward. He also expressed hope that Russia, Ukraine and the United States could resume trilateral negotiations, allowing technical teams to discuss the next steps towards ending the conflict.

Putin thanked US President Donald Trump for his efforts to resolve the war and said he wanted to hear more about the discussions between Witkoff and Zelensky.

However, significant obstacles remain. Moscow continues to pursue its territorial objectives in eastern Ukraine, while Kyiv has urged Washington not to make decisions about the country’s future without its involvement.

The latest diplomatic initiative comes amid continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least four people were killed in strikes, including two in Kyiv and an elderly couple in the Kharkiv region.

Relations between Washington and Kyiv have also faced renewed strain, with Trump pressing Zelensky to reach an agreement with Moscow. Ukraine, meanwhile, has emphasized the need for meaningful security guarantees and a lasting peace.

Witkoff described his earlier meeting with Zelensky as productive and said he hoped the discussions with Putin would represent another step towards resolving the conflict. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was also expected to participate in Wednesday’s talks remotely.

Despite renewed diplomatic activity, no major breakthrough has been announced. Whether the latest discussions can bring Russia and Ukraine closer to a lasting settlement remains uncertain.
