Air Pollution Alert: Dhaka Among the World’s Top 10 Most Polluted Cities

Dhaka continues to struggle with unhealthy air quality, ranking seventh among the world’s most polluted cities on Wednesday morning, according to data from Swiss air quality monitoring organisation IQAir.

The Bangladeshi capital recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 166 between 7am and 8am on October 21, placing it among the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The reading falls within the “unhealthy” category, indicating potential health risks for the general population.

Pakistan’s Lahore topped the list with an AQI score of 252, followed by India’s New Delhi at 239. Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jakarta also ranked ahead of Dhaka.

Singapore, Manama and Doha completed the top 10.

An AQI score between 151 and 200 is classified as unhealthy. Exposure to polluted air can pose health risks, particularly for children, older adults and people with existing health conditions.

Health experts advise limiting unnecessary outdoor activities during periods of poor air quality and wearing a suitable mask when going outside.
