Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is set to receive the American Film Institute’s (AFI) 52nd Life Achievement Award, recognising his remarkable contribution to the film industry over a career spanning more than four decades.
The 64-year-old actor and producer will be honoured at a gala ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2027. The event will celebrate his achievements through tributes from friends and longtime collaborators, highlights from his iconic films and an acceptance speech.
Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI’s board of trustees, praised Cruise as a global icon whose dedication to filmmaking has helped shape American cinema and strengthen the theatrical movie-going experience worldwide. She also highlighted his belief in cinema’s power to bring audiences together.
Considered one of the film industry’s most prestigious career honours, the AFI Life Achievement Award recognises individuals whose work has made a lasting contribution to cinema.
During his 45-year career, Cruise has starred in films that have generated nearly $13 billion at the global box office. His extensive body of work includes acclaimed productions such as Risky Business, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia and Minority Report.
He is also internationally recognised for leading two major blockbuster franchises, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, which have helped establish him as one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars.
Cruise has received three Academy Award nominations for acting and another as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick. In 2025, he received an honorary Oscar in recognition of his contribution to the film industry.
His other honours include recognition from the Cannes Film Festival and the Producers Guild of America, as well as France’s Knight of the Legion of Honour and awards acknowledging his humanitarian contributions.
Cruise most recently starred in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
The AFI, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to advancing film and the moving image as an art form, will use proceeds from the award gala to support its arts and education programmes.
The upcoming ceremony will celebrate Cruise’s enduring influence on Hollywood and his longstanding commitment to filmmaking for audiences around the world.
