A man detained in Jhenaidah on suspicion of being a leader of the banned Jubo League was released from police custody after local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders presented documents claiming he was an active member of their party.
Haider Ali, 45, was detained by police from his home in Talsar village, under Kushna Union in Kotchandpur upazila, on Wednesday evening, October 21. He was released approximately three hours later, at around 9 p.m.
According to Kotchandpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan, police acted on confidential information suggesting that Haider was the general secretary of Ward No. 4 of the banned Jubo League.
However, local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders subsequently visited the police station and claimed that Haider had been an active member of their party since 2022. To support their claim, they submitted receipts for party contributions and documents showing his participation in various party meetings and programmes.
After consulting senior officials and reviewing the documents, police released Haider into the custody of local Jamaat leaders, the officer said.
The officer also stated that action would be taken against the informant in connection with the incident.
Several local Jamaat leaders were present at the police station to secure Haider’s release, including Kotchandpur upazila Jamaat’s acting amir Azizur Rahman and district Jamaat Shura member and youth affairs secretary Shariful Islam.
Kotchandpur municipal Jamaat amir Abdul Qayyum said the party provided documents to establish Haider’s association with Jamaat since 2022. Police reviewed the submitted materials before handing him over to the upazila Jamaat leadership.
