Madrasa Headteacher’s Wife Arrested Over Alleged Rape of 13-Year-Old Student

Police in Savar have arrested the wife of a madrasa headteacher over allegations that she helped her husband conceal the alleged rape of a 13-year-old female student. The headteacher remains at large as the investigation continues.

The accused woman, identified as Mosammat Tohfa, 40, is the wife of Maulana Md Ab Bari, 50, who owns and heads a women’s madrasa in the Chhoto Kaliakoir area of Savar.

According to the case statement, Bari allegedly took the student to a room beside the madrasa office on Wednesday morning and sexually assaulted her. He allegedly threatened the girl with serious consequences if she disclosed the incident.

His wife is accused of subsequently threatening the student to keep her silent. The girl later managed to leave the premises with assistance from a madrasa cook and informed her grandfather after returning home.

The victim’s grandfather filed a case against the couple with Savar Model Police Station, according to police.

As news of the allegations spread, angry local residents gathered at the madrasa on Wednesday evening and vandalised the building. Police initially encountered resistance while attempting to take the accused woman’s wife and son into custody. Additional police teams later arrived and took them to the station.

Police said Tohfa was sent to court on Thursday, while investigators continued efforts to locate Bari, who had reportedly fled.

The incident has sparked widespread anger in the area and renewed concerns about the safety of children in educational institutions.

The allegations are under investigation, and the accused are entitled to due process under the law.
