Killers Growing Bolder in Bangladesh: Where Are So Many Weapons Coming From?

The growing use of firearms in violent crimes has raised serious concerns about the availability of illegal weapons in Bangladesh. Questions are mounting over how criminals are obtaining guns and why efforts to prevent the circulation of illegal arms remain challenging.

Recent reports of armed violence have renewed public concern about the sources of weapons used by criminal groups. Illegal firearms may enter the country through cross-border smuggling networks, while weapons stolen from law enforcement agencies can also pose a security risk if they are not recovered.

Bangladesh has previously experienced major arms-smuggling incidents, including the seizure of a massive shipment of weapons and ammunition at the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited jetty in April 2004. The incident, widely known as the 10-truck arms haul, remains one of the country’s most significant weapons-smuggling cases.

More recently, the recovery of weapons stolen from police stations has presented another challenge for law enforcement. According to a Bangla Tribune report published in September 2026, 1,306 firearms looted from police stations following the political upheaval of August 2024 had yet to be recovered at the time of publication.

Investigators also face difficulties tracing the origins of some confiscated firearms and identifying the networks responsible for supplying them. Security experts have previously highlighted the importance of stronger border surveillance, intelligence sharing and investigations into weapons-trafficking networks.

The circulation of illegal firearms poses risks not only to public safety but also to law enforcement officers tasked with tackling organised crime. Experts have stressed that recovering missing weapons and disrupting smuggling networks are essential to reducing the availability of guns to criminals.

The issue raises an important question for authorities: how can illegal weapons be prevented from reaching criminal hands, and what further measures are needed to ensure that stolen firearms are recovered?

Strengthening investigations, improving coordination among law enforcement agencies and holding those involved in illegal arms trafficking accountable will be crucial to addressing the problem.
