At least nine party leaders and workers left empty-handed after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s public meeting in Rajshahi, their mobile phones gone in the chaos that followed the event.
The gathering took place on Tuesday afternoon at the historic Madrasa field. Once the speeches ended and people began streaming out of the packed ground, phones started disappearing. Some owners simply could not find their devices in the press of bodies; others later claimed their pockets had been cut and the phones lifted straight out.
Eight of those who lost phones went to the local police station and filed general diaries. One of the victims was Tausif Azad, the son of Rajshahi Development Authority chairman and metropolitan BNP joint secretary Abul Kalam Azad Sweet.
Sweet described what happened: as the prime minister finished speaking and prepared to leave, his son was standing just behind the stage. In the sudden surge of the crowd someone simply took the phone. Tausif later reported the loss at Boalia police station.
The incident has left many who attended the rally talking about the risks that come with large public meetings, where enthusiasm and sheer numbers can create the perfect cover for quick-fingered thieves.
