Ishraque Hossain Resigns as State Minister, Says Party Did Not Want Him to Step Down

Ishraque Hossain has announced his resignation as State Minister for Liberation War Affairs, saying the decision was his own and was not what his party wanted.

Speaking to reporters at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday, October 19, Hossain said the current situation arose from his involvement in an anti-drug operation. He explained that he had decided to leave the cabinet for specific reasons, although he did not provide further details.

Hossain also made it clear that stepping down from his ministerial position would not end his campaign against drugs. Instead, he pledged to take a more aggressive approach to the fight against drug-related activities.

The controversy began after a video circulated on social media showing Hossain carrying a firearm during an anti-drug operation in the Gandaria area of Dhaka. The incident triggered public debate and criticism, putting his actions under scrutiny.

Hossain said he had chosen to resign so that the situation would not cause embarrassment for his party or affect the government’s work. He added that he intended to continue his anti-drug activities as a BNP member rather than as a government minister.

His resignation comes amid growing public discussion about the role of political leaders in anti-drug operations and the appropriate involvement of public officials in such activities.
