KUSHTIA, Bangladesh — Police recovered a suspected time bomb and two bottles containing petrol from the premises of the shrine of Baul legend Fakir Lalon Shah in Kushtia early Monday, October 19, prompting authorities to tighten security and restrict access to the site.
The suspicious device was discovered during a three-day programme marking the 136th death anniversary of the renowned mystic and spiritual figure. A bomb disposal team brought in from Dhaka examined the materials and safely defused the device, according to local police and media reports.
The incident occurred at Lalon Shah’s shrine in Cheuriya, under Kumarkhali upazila, where devotees, Baul followers and spiritual practitioners had gathered to attend the anniversary celebrations.
According to police, a suspicious white bag was spotted near the shrine’s main entrance at around 1:30 am on Monday. The bag was reportedly found near a coconut tree, close to a police security post at the entrance to the shrine complex.
After receiving information about the bag, local police moved to secure the area and took precautionary measures to protect people staying inside the premises. Sadhus and fakirs were moved to a safer location while officers waited for specialists to examine the suspected explosive.
A four-member bomb disposal team from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police subsequently arrived at the scene. The team examined the contents of the bag and recovered an explosive device along with two bottles containing approximately two litres of petrol.
Other reports said the suspicious materials included metal components and electrical wiring. Police later confirmed that the device had been defused.
Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin confirmed the recovery and said the situation had returned to normal following the operation. Authorities are investigating who left the materials at the shrine and what their intentions may have been.
The discovery prompted additional security measures at the shrine and surrounding areas. Police personnel were deployed to monitor the premises, while access for devotees and visitors was restricted as a precaution. Reports also indicated that additional security forces were deployed following the incident.
The timing of the discovery raised particular concern because the shrine was hosting a major annual gathering attended by people from different parts of Bangladesh.
The three-day programme, organised to commemorate Lalon Shah’s 136th death anniversary, began on October 17. It includes discussions, cultural events, traditional performances and a rural fair, attracting followers of Lalon’s philosophy as well as visitors interested in Bangladesh’s Baul musical heritage.
Although the main gathering of devotees had concluded earlier on Sunday, cultural activities and musical performances were scheduled to continue through Monday evening.
Lalon Shah remains one of the most influential figures in Bangladesh’s folk and spiritual traditions. His songs and philosophy have long been associated with humanity, spiritual reflection and a rejection of social divisions. His shrine in Cheuriya is an important cultural and religious destination that attracts devotees throughout the year, particularly during annual commemorative events.
Authorities had already introduced security measures for this year’s programme, including surveillance arrangements. The discovery of the suspected explosive prompted further precautions to reduce risks to visitors and prevent any potential disturbance.
Investigators are now working to establish who placed the bag inside the shrine complex, whether the device was intended to cause an explosion and whether the incident was connected to the anniversary gathering.
As of Monday, no confirmed information had been released identifying those responsible or establishing a motive. Police have not publicly attributed the incident to any particular individual or organisation.
The recovery has renewed attention to security at large public gatherings, particularly events that attract substantial crowds in confined or culturally significant locations. Authorities will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident before drawing conclusions about its purpose.
For now, the immediate danger has been addressed following the defusal of the device. Police have said the situation is normal, while security arrangements remain strengthened as the investigation continues.
The incident has cast a shadow over the anniversary celebrations at Lalon Shah’s shrine, with authorities focusing on identifying those responsible and ensuring the safety of devotees, performers and visitors attending the remaining programmes.
