Extortion Case Filed Against Six, Including Jamaat MP Shahjahan Chowdhury’s Personal Secretary

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 24: An extortion case has been filed against six people, including Arman Uddin, personal secretary to Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Chattogram-15 MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, and his brother Arif Uddin.

Amir Hossain, a resident of Lohagara, filed the case at the Chattogram Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Sunday (August 23). The court took cognizance of the case and ordered the Additional Superintendent of Police of Satkania Circle to investigate and submit a report.

According to the complaint, Arman, Arif and their associates allegedly demanded Tk 2 million from Hossain over a property dispute and threatened to take control of his building and shops if he refused to pay.

The complaint alleges that on April 3, the accused broke into a furniture shop on the ground floor of Hossain’s building and took furniture and other goods worth around Tk 1.16 million, along with Tk 120,000 in cash.

It further alleges that during a meeting on August 20, the accused again demanded Tk 2 million and threatened Hossain. One of the accused allegedly threatened to kill him if he failed to pay, while several others allegedly assaulted him.

Hossain said he first approached Lohagara Police Station, but after the case was not registered, he filed the complaint with the court.

The other accused are Arif Uddin, Shawkat Ali, Adil, Anwar and Zainal Abedin. Four to five unidentified people have also been named.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ariful Islam Siddiqui said he had learned about the case through the media but had not yet received any official instructions.

Arman Uddin denied the allegations, claiming that he and his brother had been in Saudi Arabia long before the dates mentioned in the complaint. He also denied calling or personally knowing the plaintiff.
