As part of a cabinet reshuffle under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, technocrat Humayun Kabir has been appointed as a new State Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Kabir took oath at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban on Friday evening. The appointment was later formally announced through a gazette notification signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani.

With his appointment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs now has two state ministers serving under Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. Shama Obaid Islam, who was already serving as state minister, will continue in her position alongside Kabir.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani said having two state ministers in the same ministry would not create any administrative complications.

Before becoming state minister, Humayun Kabir served as the prime minister’s adviser on foreign affairs. He also served as an adviser to the ministries of Disaster Management and Relief, and Civil Aviation and Tourism.

Officials familiar with the matter said Kabir was appointed because of his extensive experience in international relations and diplomacy, as well as his active role in shaping the government’s international policies.
