US President Donald Trump has criticised French President Emmanuel Macron over France’s immigration policies, claiming that Paris could soon become a Muslim-majority city.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Monday, Trump argued that France’s approach to immigration had contributed to unrest and disorder in the country. He said he had warned Macron years ago that allowing large numbers of migrants into France would lead to serious problems.
Trump described Macron as a friend but claimed the French leader had made a major mistake by allowing people from around the world to enter the country. He also contrasted France’s immigration policies with his own administration’s approach to border controls.
His remarks came amid reports of protests, clashes with police and looting in several French cities over the weekend. Authorities have introduced local curfews and restrictions on public gatherings in parts of Paris, Lille and Nice in an effort to restore order.
According to reports cited by Bangla Tribune, French authorities have arrested around 2,400 people in connection with the unrest, while approximately 1,000 police officers have been injured.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the government remained committed to restoring public order and had not ruled out declaring a state of emergency if the situation worsened.
President Macron has condemned the violence, saying that peaceful demonstrations cannot justify destruction or attacks on public institutions and businesses. He has also indicated that local authorities may impose further restrictions where necessary to protect public safety.
Trump’s comments have added an immigration debate to the discussion surrounding France’s unrest. However, his prediction about Paris becoming a Muslim city is a political claim, not an established demographic forecast.
