Teen Boy Tied to Tree and Tortured Overnight in Bangladesh’s Rangpur

A teenage boy was allegedly tied to a tree and brutally tortured overnight in Pirganj, Rangpur, following allegations that he was in a romantic relationship with the daughter of a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader.

The incident reportedly took place on Saturday night, October 17, in Sujarkuthi Namapara village in Tukuria Union. The case came to public attention after a video of the alleged abuse circulated on social media, sparking widespread outrage.

According to local sources, the accused leader, Ataur Master, and his associates allegedly took the boy, Sajid, on suspicion of having a relationship with the leader’s daughter, who studies in the same tenth-grade class as him.

The boy was allegedly tied to a tree with a rope and beaten with sticks and plastic pipes. Local accounts claim that he lost consciousness during the assault. When his relatives arrived at the scene, they were allegedly verbally abused and forced to leave.

The boy was reportedly handed over to his relatives and local residents the following morning. He later claimed that he had been subjected to hours of torture over false allegations.

Responding to the allegations, Ataur Master acknowledged his political affiliation and said the matter had been settled within the families. Regarding the alleged beating, he described it as “a little discipline.”

Rokonuzzaman Rokon, president of the Tukuria Union Jamaat-e-Islami unit, said he had visited the location after learning about the incident but left later because he felt unwell.

The victim’s relatives have alleged that they are facing threats and pressure to keep the incident from becoming public because of the accused person’s local influence.

Pirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Haque said police would investigate and take legal action if a formal complaint was filed.
