Grameen Kalyan Appeals High Court Verdict Over Tk 666 Crore Tax Dispute
Grameen Kalyan, an organisation founded by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, has appealed to the Supreme Court against a High Court verdict ordering it to pay Tk 666 crore in taxes claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The appeal was filed with the Appellate Division on Sunday, October 18, challenging the High Court’s September 10 ruling.
The High Court had dismissed writ petitions filed by Grameen Kalyan disputing tax demands for five assessment years, from 2012–13 to 2016–17. The full text of the verdict was published on October 12, directing the organisation to pay the outstanding amount.
The dispute dates back to 2017, when Grameen Kalyan filed two separate writ petitions challenging the NBR’s tax assessments. The case went through several legal proceedings before a newly constituted High Court bench dismissed the petitions.
Barristers Abdullah Al Mamun and Fida M Kamal represented Dr Yunus in the case.
The latest appeal marks another stage in the long-running legal dispute between Grameen Kalyan and the tax authorities. The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division will consider the matter in further proceedings.
