US President Donald Trump has mocked the unrest sweeping across France, sarcastically describing the country as an ideal place for a revolution during an election rally.
His remarks came after demonstrations over rising living costs and inflation reportedly escalated into clashes with police, vandalism, looting and arson in several French cities.
According to a report by NDTV, large crowds took to the streets on Saturday, October 17. France’s Interior Ministry estimated that around 550,000 people participated in the demonstrations, while the labour union CGT put the figure at 800,000.
Commenting on the situation, Trump sarcastically suggested travelling to France to join the revolution, making light of the violence and unrest affecting the country.
US Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, blaming immigration and what he described as failures to address integration and cultural cohesion in Western countries. In a post on X, he argued that political leaders had overlooked these issues and warned that the consequences could be serious.
Meanwhile, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire described the damage caused by the unrest as extensive. Police reportedly used tear gas and water cannons after demonstrators threw objects and fireworks at officers. Masked youths were also accused of setting vehicles on fire and damaging and looting shops.
The protests highlight growing public frustration over the rising cost of living, while the violence has sparked renewed debate over public safety, immigration and social integration in France.
