Dhanmondi Footpath Assault: Youth Jailed for 15 Days, Police Officer Withdrawn

A young man has been sentenced to 15 days of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting a man on a footpath in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area, an incident that sparked public outrage after a video circulated widely on social media.

The sentence was handed down on Wednesday, October 14, by the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court for the Ramna Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The accused, identified as Khalid Hasan, admitted to the assault in court and was subsequently ordered to be sent to Dhaka Central Jail, Magistrate Mohammad Imran Ahmed said.

The incident took place around noon on Monday, October 12, on the footpath along Satmasjid Road, opposite Bangladesh Eye Hospital. The victim, identified as Abdullah Al Masud, also known as Masud Rana, was reportedly kicked and slapped by Khalid and forced to perform sit-ups while holding his ears.

According to police, the confrontation began after a young woman accused Masud Rana of inappropriate touching. The woman is Khalid’s niece and allegedly called him to the scene, where he confronted and assaulted Masud.

A video lasting two minutes and 12 seconds later spread across social media. It showed Khalid verbally abusing and physically attacking Masud while two police personnel stood nearby. The footage also appeared to show bystanders urging the officers to intervene, but no immediate action was taken.

Following the incident, police took Masud into custody. He was subsequently sentenced to one month in jail through a mobile court over allegations of sexual harassment and sent to prison.

The police response also came under scrutiny after the footage went viral. Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Hai of Dhanmondi Police Station was withdrawn from duty over alleged negligence for failing to intervene despite being present at the scene.

Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Imdadul Islam Toyeb said Abdul Hai had been assigned responsibility at the location. He declined to comment on the other two police personnel seen in the video, explaining that they belonged to the Public Order Management unit.

The incident has raised questions about the responsibility of law enforcement officers to intervene when violence occurs in public places, particularly when they are present at the scene.
