Imagine finding out from local media reports that two citizens of your country were just executed, without a single official word being sent to your embassy. That is the startling reality the Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah is currently facing.
Following recent reports in Saudi media claiming that two Bangladeshis—Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Sithi Akhter—were put to death in Mecca on October 14 for alleged “immoral activities” inside a mosque, the consulate has officially stepped in. On Thursday, October 15, officials sent a formal letter to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanding full transparency.
According to consulate insiders, the embassy was completely kept in the dark, receiving no prior diplomatic notes or official updates regarding their trial, conviction, or execution. Now, Dhaka’s representatives in Jeddah are pressing the Saudi authorities for comprehensive documentation, including the specific charges filed, case details, and the full text of the court’s verdict.
As the diplomatic inquiry unfolds, questions are mounting over how such a high-stakes execution could proceed without standard consular notification.
