Abed Ali’s Son Gets Four-Year Jail Term in Illegal Wealth Case
Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, the son of former Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman’s driver Syed Abed Ali, has been sentenced to four years in prison in a case involving the acquisition of illegal wealth.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday, October 15, by Dhaka Divisional Special Judge BM Tariqul Kabir, according to court officials.
In addition to the prison sentence, Siam was fined Tk 20,000. He will face an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi.
The court also ordered the confiscation of Tk 31.81 lakh in assets found to have been illegally acquired, transferring the amount to the state.
The ACC filed the case against Siam on January 5 last year, alleging that he had accumulated Tk 37.30 lakh in illegal wealth between September 3, 2021, and June 30, 2024. The case was filed by ACC Assistant Director Zakir Hossain.
Following an investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet against Siam on December 30 of the same year. Investigators identified Tk 31.81 lakh in movable and immovable assets that they said were inconsistent with his known sources of income.
The court scheduled the verdict after the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments on September 30.
Siam came under public scrutiny in connection with the widely reported PSC question paper leak scandal involving his father, Syed Abed Ali, a former driver for the commission’s ex-chairman. Siam previously served as the relief and disaster management secretary of the Dhaka North unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League. He was removed from the position in July 2024 following allegations of involvement in the question paper leak controversy.
The latest verdict marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding Siam’s alleged illegal wealth.
