Pallabi Police Station ASI Arrested in Uttara with 5,310 Yaba Tablets

A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Pallabi Police Station has been arrested in Uttara with 5,310 yaba tablets.

The arrested officer has been identified as Md Shafiqul Islam, 43, an ASI attached to Pallabi Police Station. Another man, identified as Wasim, 24, was also arrested during the operation.

Police said they arrested the two after receiving information about a drug trafficking ring. Separate raids were conducted in different parts of Uttara on Sunday night (August 23), said Bakhtiar Hossain, a sub-inspector of Dakshinkhan Police Station.

Police first conducted a raid in the Azampur Kacha Bazar area. When Wasim attempted to flee after sensing the presence of police, officers detained him. According to SI Bakhtiar, 50 yaba tablets were recovered from his possession.

Based on information provided by Wasim, police later raided a rented house and arrested ASI Shafiqul. Another 200 yaba tablets were recovered from him.

Police then raided a flat at Noor Building, House No. 67, in Bismillah Palli of the Azampur Kacha Bazar area. A further 5,110 yaba tablets were recovered from the flat.

In total, police seized 5,310 yaba tablets during the operations.

SI Shahinur Rahman, the investigating officer in the case, said a case was filed on Sunday under the Narcotics Control Act. The two arrested individuals were named as accused, along with two to three unidentified people.

He said the two accused were later produced before a court, which ordered that they be sent to jail.

According to the case statement, the two told police during preliminary interrogation that they collected yaba from different parts of the country and sold the drugs in Dakshinkhan and surrounding areas.

Md Emdadul Haque, inspector (investigation) of Pallabi Police Station, said he was aware of Shafiqul’s arrest. He also said the ASI had been irregular in performing his duties at the police station.
