Banned Jubo League Leader and Former Councillor Hacked to Death in Bhairab

KISHOREGANJ, Aug 24: Al Amin, 40, a leader of the banned Jubo League, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Bhairab, Kishoreganj.

The attack took place around midnight on Sunday in the Tinpatti area of the municipal town. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 3am.

Al Amin was the general secretary of Bhairab municipal Jubo League. He was also a former councillor of Ward No. 1 and a former director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industries. He was involved in the fertiliser business and owned a residential hotel named Riverview in Bhairab Bazar.

Family members said several cases were filed against him following the political change on August 5, 2024. He was arrested twice and spent time in jail. He was later released on bail and had largely stayed out of public view.

According to locals, Al Amin was at his hotel around 11:30pm. At about 11:50pm, he left for home on his motorcycle. Shortly after entering the road leading to his residence, several assailants surrounded him and attacked him with sharp weapons.

He suffered multiple injuries to his head, while a tendon in one of his legs was reportedly severed, causing heavy bleeding. Local residents rescued him and initially took him to a private hospital before he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Several people, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the road to his home was relatively deserted at night. They heard screams and saw several people fleeing the scene. Al Amin was found lying in a pool of blood and was initially difficult to identify because of his injuries.

His wife, Tania Khanam, said she last spoke to him at around 11:40pm. He told her he was at the hotel and would return home within five minutes, asking her to prepare dinner. She said she had no idea who might have killed him or why.

Bhairab Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahabur Rahman confirmed the incident.
