Weight-Loss Drugs May Increase Testosterone, Study Finds

GLP-1 medications used to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes may also help increase testosterone levels in some men, recent research suggests.
Drugs such as semaglutide and liraglutide are widely known for helping with weight loss and blood sugar control. Researchers are now examining whether their benefits may extend to male hormone health, particularly among men with obesity, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of seven studies involving 680 participants found that GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with higher total testosterone levels, along with reductions in body weight, BMI, waist circumference and HbA1c.
Another review published in 2026, which analysed 10 studies involving 639 men, also found that total testosterone generally increased during GLP-1 treatment. However, results for free testosterone were less consistent.
Experts caution that GLP-1 drugs should not be considered testosterone boosters. Their effect on testosterone may be indirect, with weight loss and improved metabolic health helping restore the body’s natural hormone production.
Studies have also found differences between GLP-1 treatment and testosterone replacement therapy. While both may increase testosterone levels, GLP-1 medications can produce substantially greater weight loss and may support the body’s natural reproductive hormone system.
Researchers say more large-scale, long-term studies are needed before GLP-1 medications can be considered a treatment for low testosterone or male infertility.
Doctors also warn against taking testosterone or GLP-1 drugs without medical supervision, as inappropriate testosterone use can reduce the body’s natural sperm production.
