Madrasa Teacher Detained Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Student in Cumilla

Police have detained a madrasa teacher named Hafiz Md. Monir Hossain, 32, in Chandina, Cumilla, over allegations of sexually assaulting a madrasa student. He was detained around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday (August 18) while a village arbitration was being held at the Dollai Nawabpur Union Parishad over the incident.

Earlier, on Monday night, the teacher allegedly sexually assaulted a student from the Noorani section of Nawabpur Markazun Noor Madrasa in the Nawabpur Bazar area.

The accused, Hafiz Monir Hossain, is the son of Alamgir Hossain of Rasulpur village in Maizkhar Union of Chandina upazila.

According to the victimized student, teacher Monir Hossain called him to a room on Monday night, saying that he would massage the teacher’s head and feet, and then allegedly sexually assaulted him by force.

Local sources said the student returned home Tuesday morning and informed his family about the incident. Local residents subsequently detained Monir and questioned him, during which he allegedly admitted to the incident. An agitated crowd then took him to the union parishad after beating him.

Later that evening, Union Parishad Chairman Md. Shahjahan Mia and other prominent local residents held a village arbitration to resolve the matter. Local journalists arrived at the scene, learned about the incident and informed the police. Police subsequently detained the accused teacher from the union parishad.

Regarding the village arbitration over the alleged sexual assault, Dollai Nawabpur Union Parishad Chairman Md. Shahjahan Mia said, “Both sides came to my office seeking a settlement, so we held a village arbitration. Later, the police came and took him away.”

Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Nuruzzaman said that after learning about the matter through local journalists, police immediately detained the accused teacher from the union parishad and took him to the police station. He added that the victim’s family had informed police that they would file a case over the incident.
